Abstract 
Volume 10 of Japanstudien was published in December 1998. In contrast to previous issues, all fourteen articles of the volume focus on the overall theme "Japan's New Role in Asia." The choice of this years topic was not only closely related to the DIJ's research project "Japan in Asia." It also provided the opportunity to include the perspectives of all academic fields represented at the Institute, i.e., economics, political and social sciences and cultural studies. Seven book reviews evaluate Japanese publications of the years 1996 and 1997 and a new Japanese-German dictionary.
