Abstract 
The book contains the papers of a conference which was jointly organized under the same title by the DIJ and the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft and held in Cologne in May 1996. The twelve papers describe the econoomic problems and challenges faced by the Japanese and German economies and compare the responsive strategies for which public authorities and private companies have opted. In two introductory articles, representatives of the German and the Japanese business communities offer their views on the future international competitiveness of German and Japanese companies. Following two overview articles on the Japanese and German situation are papers devoted to specific areas, such as innovation management, technology policy, crisis/recession management, social security and structural change in the distribution industry. The German-Japanese comparison presented under each of these topics reveals both the similarities and the differences between the two countries with regard to both actual problems and policy and adjustment strategies.
