岡田利規（1973年～）は日本の現代演劇を代表する劇作家、演出家、小説家である。世界的に影響力のある演劇カンパニー、チェルフィッチュを1997年に旗揚げした。社会的不平等、東日本大震災、ポストヒューマン社会といった題材を扱った岡田の作品は、日本をはじめ世界各地の演劇祭で数多く上演されている。岡田は演劇的思索家であり、作品で語られる言葉は、日常の話し言葉から、言語自体の性質と、人間の経験の複雑さを伝えるその限界についてのメタコメンタリーにまで及ぶ。ダンス、演劇、映画、ビジュアルアートの融合芸術の先駆者である岡田は、身体表現と演劇表現の新たな形を創造してきた。表現の場を貪欲に開拓し、劇場にとどまらず、ナイトクラブ、ギャラリー、映画、デジタルプラットフォームなどで作品を発表している。

『 岡田利規と日本の演劇』は、岡田利規の作品と、日本および世界の現代演劇の発展におけるその重要性を探るものである。本書は、第一線の研究者らによるエッセイをまとめたもので、日本語以外の言語で書かれたものとしては初である。また、岡田のインタビューや戯曲の翻訳、演劇に関する文章のほか、舞台写真も豊富に収載されている。本書は、学際的な観点から岡田作品を詳細に分析することにより、傑出したこの日本人芸術家の作品に対する洞察をもたらす同時に、現代日本の芸術と社会の深い理解に資するものである。
