					バーバラ・ホルトスは、2006年にドイツのトリアー大学で日本学、2010年にハワイ大学で社会学の2つの博士号を取得。 2018年4月にドイツ日本研究所の副所長に就任。それ以前は、ウィーン大学東アジア研究学科/日本学部の助教を務めていた。家族社会学の中で、少子化問題、ウェルビーイング、メディア、ジェンダー、日本の地方、主に人口動態と社会変動が研究テーマとしている。
ドイツ科学財団(DFG)の助成による、「ドイツと日本における親の満足度の比較に関する研究プロジェクト」(2014~2017年)では、主任研究員を務めた。
近著に『Japan through the lens of the Tokyo Olympics』(2020年、共編著 I. Gagne, W. Manzenreiter, F. Waldenberger)、『Parental well-being: Satisfaction with work, family life, and family policy in Germany and Japan』(2018年、共編著H. Bertram)、『Life course, happiness and well-being in Japan』 (2017年、共編著 W.
